FIRE STATION VISIT“The best education you’ll ever get is by traveling. Nothing teaches you more than exploring the world and accumulating experiences.” - Mark Patterson The students of grades I & II, visited ‘Haryana Fire and Emergency Services’, to extend their knowledge about the community helpers. They got a hands-on-experience in fire safety and the essential community helper- the ‘Firefighter’. They watched how firefighters use their fire trucks in an emergency. The firefighters showed them the different equipment used by them and demonstrated the use of a fire extinguisher. Children were ecstatic when they saw a firefighter slide down the pole. They asked many questions to the firefighters. The firefighters were surprised by the inquisitiveness of the children. They were told about the emergency number where they can call when there is a fire. Their visit was aimed at learning about the duties of firefighters and also to get fire safety measures for day-to-day life. All in all it was a fun-filled and an informative experience for the children. ENGLISHLiterature Students completed the Unit- Wheels with focus on reading, comprehension, glossary and writing skills. This was taken up to make the learners aware of the distinction between Fiction and Non-fiction text. This was followed by students inculcating reading habits by taking turns in the class and reading through the pages of the supplementary reader- Treasure of Tales; Unit- ‘Work, Work, Work’. New spelling patterns and paragraph writing undertaken in this month helped in keeping the learners’ writing skills in check. Grammar Stepping into the second term was highlighted with the first and the most enjoyed activity- ‘Adjective Detective’ which was a class activity where students learnt the practical life application of classroom learning of the topic- ‘Comparison of Adjectives’. Connecting the sentences became fun when ‘Conjunctions’ were made from paper linkers, ensuring that methods like these, aid the topics in staying glued to the memory, especially when students presented their creations in an impactful manner. Interesting concepts such as ‘Stretch a Sentence’ and ‘Onomatopoeia words’ gave the learners a chance to dig deep into the formation of longer sentences while using words that create noise. Onomatopoeia words were taught through video demonstrations and were recapitulated with the help of interactive worksheets. Further, with the help of anchor charts, students learnt about ‘Homophones’ and their appropriate usage in sentences. It started with a discussion on homeless people seen on the roads. The teachers put forth several queries on situations given to the students to test their pre-knowledge such as “Where do you live? Why do you feel that we need to live in a house? What type of houses do you live in? How would people be living if they didn’t know how to build a house?” The teacher used various audio-video aids like pictures and videos to make the students understand the significance of shelter in their lives, types of houses, different rooms in a house and people who help us to build our houses. To explain this further, the educators took the students to ‘Visit a construction site’, wherein students were familiarized with the building materials, tools and machines used in constructing a house. The topic ‘Community Helpers’ was discussed with the students and its importance in society was explained with the help of a video demonstration. The role of various community helpers at different levels in a school, were shared by the children. The students made beautiful ‘Gratitude Cards’ for their favourite ‘Community helper’. To build on the topic further, a video demonstration was conducted to discuss about 'Our neighbourhood services'. This was done to explain the kind of services that we see in our neighbourhood and their importance was explained in depth. As experiential learning is an integral part of education, students were taken to a ‘Field trip to the Fire Station’ where they learnt about the importance of firefighters in our society and how firefighters rescue people by putting their own life at risk. They explored flexible methods and models to solve and represent array method, wherein concrete models, pictorial representations were included.
